Structural Engineers at Diales and Fabricators at Littlehampton Welding came together to create the steel sculpture from Designer Gerry Judah for the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2016, celebrating the BMW centennial. Using GRAITEC Advance Design and Autodesk Advance Steel, the steel sculpture showcases three classic BMW cars launched into the sky in different directions, floating over the Goodwood Festival attendees.

The sculpture measures 100m long x 25m wide x 40m high, with triangulated steel plates welded together using laser cuts to precise ±0.5mm tolerance.

“Advance Design has a very user-friendly environment to navigate and inspect the results, especially the dynamic and non-linear analysis results. We used Advance Design to develop a BIM workflow with the steel specialist for flawless and effortless transfer of design, loads and section sizes.” – Hooman Baghi, Associate Director and Structural Engineer, Diales

The Challenge

  • Dynamic analysis
  • Resistance against lateral load
  • Stress-strain, non-linear analysis

The Solution

  • Smooth meshing in Advance Design assisting the identification of potential risks and highly stressed areas on planer elements
  • Advance Design has a user-friendly environment to navigate and inspect results, especially dynamic and non-linear analysis results
  • Advance Design handles the unusual and difficult 3D analysis models, regardless of the number of nodes, elements, plates and joint connections

User Benefits

  • Able to use Advance Design with minimum technical and professional resource, resulting in time savings, adherence to a tight programme and consequent cost reduction
  • Use of Advance Design BIM to communicate with Littlehampton Welding to transfer the design intention, loads and section sizes
